I read this book after a season of listening to some preaching which had made me prone to the religious spirit. My behavior was characterized by judgmentality, quickly seeing supposed faults in other Christians, being very hard on Christians who did not seem zealous for Jesus, and having confusion about pressing in to knowing God. This is to say it mildly!
Just before beginning the summer as a Bible camp counselor, I read this book. It was crucial in knocking off the religious spirit in my life, and allowed for me to be used by the Lord to bring His love into the camp. He had me read it at just the right time! If I had not, I might have eventually quit the Bible camp, due to the religious spirit I had. Instead, it helped me especially to walk in the second greatest commandment. The Lord used me to lead about 10 children to Christ, and I am confident that this would not have happened, if not for the contributions of the teachings I got from "Overcoming the Religious Spirit." It also helped me to distance myself from the type of preachers which are very legalistic, and lead people into the religious spirit.
The book also helped me to get a better understanding of seeking Jesus. For one example: When I used to mess up and become ensnared in sin, I would sometimes in turn drink coffee to stay up late reading the Bible, praying, and reading other Christian books. Not to say that some of that, done in the right heart-attitude, is wrong. Rather, I was doing this out of the wrong mindset, and Rick's book helped me in this.
That said, I highly recommend this book!

I read it in spanish, it had so much to see against my way of living! I decided to read it again, step by step, praying, asking....MMMMMH! it was amazing to discover how I was involved with the spirit of the pharisees! Now I am happy to re discover Love and Grace from God. Before I had some idea that something was not going the correct way, but I was unable to see what was it! After reading this book, the way I preached was restablished to teach about the Tree of Life instead of accusing what is wrong as if I were the only one walking without mistakes, not that there is no wrong to talk about if the Holy Spirit is willing to rebuke, but, I mean: how we present sin and wichedness may be different. My plan is to walk without resistance to the Holy Spirit..... as the wind! Praise the Lord!
