Written in 1881 as a history book for children, Charles C. Coffin's sequel to The Story of Liberty is by no means childish. Originally titled Old Times In The Colonies, it is a fascinating look at American history beginning with the explorers: Columbus, the Cabots, Vasco da Gama, Amerigo Vespucci, Ponce de Leon, Hernando Cortez, Jacque Cartier, and others. It looks also at the political and religious rivalries that spread across the sea to root in western soil. It concludes with the outcome of the English and French battle for control of the Western Continent in 1760 in Quebec.
"Surely there is a meaning of history, else what are we living for? In this volume you will see how Tyranny and Wrong have fought against Liberty and Justice but how Tyranny and Wrong have gone down before it. Men die, generations come and go but ideas live on. Through all the narratives of wars, massacres, and bloodshed, you will see Right, Justice, and Liberty ever advancing." – Charles Coffin
